Sestili Massimo and Mario Fiorentini
Historia Magistra n.4-Interview with Mario Fiorentini by Massimo Sestili
"Mario Fiorentini, nom de guerre 'John', born in Rome on November 7, 1918, is a character foreground of the Resistance and Roman culture. During its ninety-two years of life has grown various passions: poetry, drama, visual arts, music. Then, after the war, has finally landed in mathematics, becoming a distinguished university professor of international renown. And yet, the formula of the intellectual passion of civil or distinguished scholar in mathematics is not exhaustive of a personality that has combined, like few others, a passion for culture and research, and reckless military action to liberate Rome from Nazi, providing a valuable contribution to the Allies. "
Sestili Massimo and Mario Fiorentini

These are the first lines of my introduction to the witness rilasciatami by Mario Fiorentini, commander of the GAP 'Gramsci' within nine months of the occupation of Rome by the Nazis. A precious, not only because it is a protagonist of Roman strength, but because Mario was in addition to being a man of action is also and above all a man of culture, able to open his account with the new scenarios on individual people who have sacrificed their lives for free Italy from fascism.
However, the story of the partisan 'John' No reference to 4 of Historia Magistra. In this brief note I want instead to talk of friendship, of availability, the generosity with which Mario and his wife Lucia Otto, also belonging to the partisan gap 'Gramsci', have welcomed me into their home.
With Mario we met in March of 2010. I tried because I thought of him for an interview Historia Magistra, a project that greatly pleased with Angelo d'Orsi, who as editor of the magazine approved and further stimulated the original idea. Mario has accepted a enthusiasm that I could not imagine and I was welcomed with a friendly smile, putting me at ease immediately. After that has not stopped since, I swept like an avalanche with its tale of detailed reconstructions of individual actions, of men of the resistance which they are untraceable, the constant references to and quotations from authors and books on the nine tragic months of employment.
Faced with a personality so vibrant and generous I immediately realized that the interview based on the sequence question / answer was impossible, Mario followed his speech and his project with great lucidity, he wanted to put conditions thoroughly understand the reasons for such a radical choice and at the same time, wanted to deepen the Roman History of the Resistance. So the initial project has been gradually transforming itself into a long in presenting testimony in a small part.
Mario Over the past ten months we have heard and seen almost daily, I was born a beautiful friendship consolidated well as the numerous hours of recordings, made together from many walks on the sites of partisan fighting and several lunches consumed restaurants that loves to attend.
The work is continuing and should be built as soon as a book In addition to reporting the complete testimony of Mario characters and explores some aspects of Roman resistance so far little studied.
Sestili Massimo and Mario Fiorentini

Of all this I want to thank you with affection and friendship Mario. By virtue of his story, his selflessness, his tender smile, went well beyond the military history of the GAP and I could understand the feelings, fears, anxieties, the reasons, men who have chosen in a given time of their lives to war and die for a living; dall’altra parte, i nazifascisti, combattevano e morivano per la morte.
